Re: Addiction to shopping
The visual argument on addiction to shopping shows the bad things that happens when one is addicted to shopping. For example, it shows how some people are willing to risk their safety in order to get the merchandise they desire. At the beginning of the video, the people are rushing inside the Disney store to buy one specific item, which is followed by the picture of the mall with a lot of people.
There are better things to do than to shop and this visual argument also shows it. For example, one can volunteer to do something better for the community and for themselves and others as well.
Shopping just leads to bad things when it becomes an addiction. It doesn’t just put peoples’ lives into danger but it also get them into trouble and sometimes it just gets people in debt with their credit cards. In reality the credit cards don’t help but instead they put people in even greater debt.
Shopping once in a while isn’t a bad thing but one has to realize that if there is a great amount of shopping being done, one can do something better than that. There are many organizations one can join and people are always looking for volunteers to help out.

Community Problem Report
As the United States’ debt has increased in the past years, it has been at its highest recently. As of right now the debt is about 13 trillion dollars and each citizen owes about 43 thousand dollars (U.S. National Debt Clock. (2010). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from U.S. National Debt Clock: http://www.usdebtclock.org/.) A lot of the debt has to do with war, but Americans have been spending more money than what they actually have as well. With credit cards being so easy to receive people believe that they can shop as much as they would like, but they do not realize that they have to pay them back with interest as well. Shopping has become one of peoples’ favorite pastime activities and this can lead to bad problems including debt, having clusters all over their homes among other things (It was our National Pastime. (2008). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from The Independent UK: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/it-was-our-national-pastime-ndash-but-now-shopping-is-just-so-over-1026305.html).
Addiction to shopping can be caused by different reasons. It can also start at a young age. There are young children that receive allowances that they spend right away while there are other children that save their money and try to put it to good use later on. While one can see the difference between the young ones that save money from the ones that do not save money one does not actually take it into consideration that there is a possibility that one (the one that does not save money) might become an addict to purchasing things later on. The child might not even realize it themselves and later on they will keep on buying more and more things. As they grow older their purchases will also grow but it will be in greater amounts of money and they might not even realize it. The credit card companies make it easy for everyone to receive a credit card. Before anyone can realize it the young teens that turn of age to apply for a credit card will be getting their credit cards.
Another thing that can cause an addiction to shopping is depression (Are you addicted to Shopping? (2007). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from Health Central: http://www.healthcentral.com/depression/c/18/17742/addicted-shopping.) Although this statement may sound a bit odd it is very true. There are a lot of people out there that suffer from depression and they feel the need to shop to fill in the empty gap they feel because of their depression. Others think that if they shop it will make them happy. This may be true but this happiness is only temporary and once the effect wears off their depression might worsen. Some people might see their shopping as a way out of the depression but they do not realize that their shopping addiction might cost them more than they expected. If they start using their credit cards or get loans they will have to pay off the amount that they used plus the interest on the money that they borrowed.
While addiction to shopping may come at a young age for some it might start at a later age for others. When you step into a high school you see teens all over the place with the latest gadgets for school like iphones, ipads, and blackberry devices. Along with these great gadgets you will also find people wearing the latest clothing from Abercrombie and Fitch, Coach, Hollister, and Dooney & Bourke, among other brands. This leads to another type of addiction to shopping but this one is just to fit in with everyone else. This is also not a good thing because before you know it you have teenagers asking their parents for great amounts of money just so they can fit in with their friends. Anyone can see that as soon as they walk in to a high school, and sometimes it feels like you have just walked into a fashion show because everybody has just about everything that you would see in one of these events. Although the teenagers might not see a problem with this it will be something that will escalate in the near future if they continue at the pace they are going.
Shopping as stated before can cause great amounts of debt if it becomes an addiction. If it is done in moderation and with the intents of paying off the credit cards, if applicable, it can help out the economy and spread money around. If one uses credit cards and isn’t aware of the facts and risk one might have it wouldn’t be a good thing to have a credit card to begin with. There are a lot of useful resources that one can find to be aware and avoid being put in a horrible position due to the credit card debt. Even now the universities have workshops and web pages to help students avoid credit cards by showing helpful tips to being safe from the cruel thing credit cards can be (Credit Card Awareness. (2010). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from Eastern Arizona College: http://www.eac.edu/campus_life/Student_Handbook/credit.shtm.) Some things that a credit card owner should take into consideration is the grace period, which is the amount of time the credit card company will let you pay off your credit card without having to pay interest. Another thing to look at is the interest rate that the credit card company will be giving you; one should look for a low interest rate rather than a really high one. Some credit cards, like the one Abercrombie and Fitch offers, have a very high interest rate (Abercrombie & Fitch Credit Card. (2003). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from Abercrombie & Fitch: https://onlineaccess.mycreditcard.cc/abercrombie.)
Although there are various things that can trigger the addiction to shopping there are also other things that can prevent one from falling into the crazy idea of shopping constantly. For example, instead of shopping one can spend more time studying for an important exam or for a big speech that will be coming up soon. There are a lot of students that would much rather be walking around the mall looking for things to shop but a lot of the times people need to realize that education is one of the most important thing one can buy rather than buying that really cute purse or those great looking shoes that one has been dying to purchase.
Another thing one can do is get a job. This will not only prevent one from shopping but it will also put money in ones’ pocket. It is also a great way to help one get out of depression. The economy isn’t at its greatest right now and it is hard to find jobs but if one finds a job that they enjoy it will be a great thin g to conquer because instead of spending time walking around the stores looking for things to buy one will be to o focused trying to do ones job. Another thing would be to find a healthy hobby. One example would be walking around the park instead of at the mall. This way one will not be tempted to walk inside a store because it has sale signs on the windows.Another great thing one can do to avoid being shopaholic as some people call it is to volunteer. It is always a great thing to volunteer especially if it benefits other people as well as one. There are a lot of great organizations out there like Girl Scouts that are always welcoming new volunteers to help them reach their valuable goal in their organization (Become a Girl Scout Volunteer. (2010). Retrieved October 25, 2010 from Girl Scouts: http://www.girlscouts.org/for_adults/volunteering/.)There are a numerous amounts of organizations that one can be a part of and they are a great part of one’s community.

Rhetorical and Visual Analysis Essay

Rhetorical and Visual Analysis
The intended audience for this visual (Personal Finance Management Guide. (2008). Retrieved September 27, 2010 from Personal Finance Management Guide: http://personal-finance-management.blogspot.com/2007/12/ 10-easy-steps-to-stop-shopping.html.) is for all the people that like to shop but not just that they can also get what they want at cheap prices. This can easily be seen because it has the words DANGER BARGAINS AHEAD. It also has a picture of two females fighting for the same item. It can represent that the item is very cheap and it is also at a great demand that people are fighting for it. It is definitely intended for people that like the idea of shopping and are willing to do just about anything to get the items that they would like.
The location from this image is from an article (Personal Finance Management Guide. (2008). Retrieved September 27, 2010 from Personal Finance Management Guide: http://personal-finance-management.blogspot.com/2007/12/ 10-easy-steps-to-stop-shopping.html.) that talks about ways to stop shopping addiction. It is part of a personal finance management website. The author’s credibility is increased by the way that this visual is presented because it is trying to show the way that stores try to lure in the customers by making them believe that they will find great deals inside the store. Once the customer is already inside the prices won’t be so cheap but they will have things to make them want to buy the merchandise because it is part of their marketing technique.
The author does try to stimulate emotional responses from the audience because it is saying that they should reach for help because they are not the only people that suffer from addiction to shopping. It is also trying to connect with the reader because it is saying that if you follow up on your goals you can spend a little but only if you have been good about keeping a budget. The author is trying to be realistic and they know that people can’t just quit something overnight and that it takes time, patience, and practice.
The strategy is actually very appealing to the writer’s purpose because it is trying to get the person to understand that she know exactly what they are going through.
The author is very biased about the subject it is trying to get the readers to stop their compulsive attitude towards shopping because it isn’t a good thing for them. It affects the argument because it is saying that all types of shopping is bad but there might be a good type of shopping but the reader will not know if they read this article or see the picture. There are stores that give back a certain percentage to the community or an organization but the reader might think that shopping is a completely bad thing and it might discourage people to shop, even those who do not shop a lot to begin with.
Some of the weaknesses in the argument are that it is biased and it doesn’t let the other side of the story talk about the good things that come within shopping and that it is only looking at the negative aspects of it. Another weakness is that it is also telling you to spend money once you have saved up and accomplished goals of not shopping so much. In a way it is contradicting itself.
Some really good strengths that this argument has is that it tells the readers that they should evaluate their shopping habits more wisely by distinguishing a need from a want; it also talks about creating a budget and a shopping list and to stick with it.
The visual increases the effectiveness and credibility of the author because it helps out the whole piece tie together to fit almost perfectly.
The emotions this visual is trying to capture are actually various. Some people might look at it and say “Oh they might have great sales” in a happy tone and they might want to go inside to take a look at what is inside the store. In this case it is really up to the person to see if they like it or not. In other cases there might be some people that look at the picture and say “Their sales are probably not even that great,” in that instance they might just pass by the store and not even attempt to go inside to take a look. Other people on the other hand might look at this danger sign with the two females pulling an article and assume that there are few products and would not want to fight over a piece of merchandise because it would just create chaos. These people might also think that there is already chaos in there.
It uses a danger sign and that can be viewed as both positive and negative because it can be trying to catch peoples’ attention with a bright yellow sign and saying that they will find great bargains. On the other hand you don’t really want to show that there’s chaos inside a store because it will have a bad reputation and people will not want to go inside to shop.
This visual does support the argument because it is saying that while stores are trying to say that they have good or even great sales they might not always be true. There are various stores that show a lot of great discounts or rebates but what they do not want you to see is what is written in fine print. A lot of the times they are mail-ins that people forget about or only with certain purchases or excluding certain items.
The main focus is the text in this particular article. It’s talking about the ways to be more financially stable. It is also giving you important information about ways to lower you spending budget as well.
The text and the visual complement each other very well. The visual does add something that the text kind of doesn’t; it adds that shopping is something very stressful especially when it comes to sales or clearances.
The visual does deepen the understanding of the text because it shows just about how bad situations can get when trying to shop. The visual is located over the text. It helps that it is located over it because it shows people what it will be talking about. At first the visual can be a little misleading because you might think it will talk about the best places to get bargains but as you move on the title you will see it is talking about the opposite of that.
The text would be a little dull without the picture but it would be able to survive without the visual. The visual just gives it that extra sense into the text. It is like adding salsa to tacos, it is just used to spice it up a little bit.

Agency Discourse Memo
MEMORANDUM
TO: ENGLISH 1311 STUDENTS
FROM: BIANCA VALENZUELA
SUBJECT: GIRL SCOUTS
DATE: 12/9/2010
GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA
The Girl Scouts have a very strong mission that portrays them. The mission consists of courage, confidence and character that build a girl to make the world a better place. This agency was founded in Savannah, Georgia. The first Girl Scout troop was created on 12 March, 1912 by the founder, Juliette Gordon Low. The members right now consist of 2.4 million girls and 928,000 adult members. This organization is in more than 90 countries through the program called USA Girl Scouts Overseas.
They have different discourses that they are a part of to stay connected with the community as well as with each other. They hold meetings to discuss their progress and to get others involved as well. One of their main sources of communication is through their webpage which is http://www.girlscouts.org. In this website viewers will find different information about the organization. One thing readers can see is the values that make up the Girl Scouts. They also have information on research, new, topics for the girls, topics for the adults, career information, and Global Girl Scouting among other things. In this website you will also be able to find other types of discourse communities that they are a part of. For example, you can also find the Girl Scouts on twitter, Blogger, myspace.com, flickr, facebook, and youtube.
At first one might think that the Girl Scouts can’t help with addictions to shopping but it keeps girls staying active and shows the more important things in life. It also keeps the adult members active and keeps them occupied rather than being at the mall or at a store looking at things to buy. All of the people that are a part of the Girl Scouts donate a lot of time and effort to making it a fun and enjoyable experience for the girls and they also show them the importance of having a well and healthy balanced lifestyle that doesn’t include shopping or looking for the hottest and trendiest fashions that are out there. Although there are some girls that are in Girl Scouts that do a little bit of shopping it is all in good fun and they do not make it a habit.
There are some girls that are not in Girl Scouts or in any other organization that start with the habits of shopping at a very young age and by the time they are teens they want more and more items, which later turns into an addiction to shopping. While at the same time there are other girls that are in Girl Scouts that are out having fun and doing joyful activities that allows them to have a worry free future later on when they become teenagers.
Overall the Girl Scouts of America are a great organization. It not only cultivates young girls to have a nice healthy lifestyle that brings skills for success in the future but it also helps them stay in the right path.

Discourse Community Response
Discourse communities are just about everywhere. Being able to participate in them gets people to communicate and share ideas they have in common. I belong to several discourse communities and I have four main ones. They consist of family and friends (personal), REDA member (civic), Customer Service Specialist (professional), and a UTEP student (academic).
The most important discourse community I belong to is family and friends. We all share a common goal which is to keep in touch with each other and help each other out when in need. We keep in contact with each other through phone calls, text messages, emails, Skype, and even the old fashioned letters. The type of writing is very informal and when writing to each other some words are abbreviated. The topics that I talk about with my family include school, current events (i.e. birthday parties), friends, and other things that come up while having a conversation. When I talk to my friends we talk about school and a lot of the times work related events. When talking to everyone I am courteous and respectful. Since a lot of my family speaks Spanish most of the time I also try to speak Spanish when I am around them. For the most part when I am with my friends I speak English.
Another discourse community I’m in, which falls under the civic category, is being a member of the Regional Economic Development Association (REDA). We communicate with each other via text messages, emails, and phone calls. When we have meetings we talk about upcoming projects, assign topics so we can write articles on them, and discuss community service opportunities. When we try to reach the public about upcoming events we are hosting or new articles on the web site we usually have posters up or spread the word with people we know. The type of writing we do is always very professional. The common goal is to help out the community and inform them about the economic development in this region.
Working at office depot involves a lot of writing to communicate to other employees and customers. We usually write memos to communicate with each other and post them in the break room. There are also posters and all sorts of different visuals in the break room to try and keep us updated with things (i.e. new products, extended hours, and meetings). There is even more writing within the copy and print department. I usually have to send out emails to customers explaining their order, how long it will take, the price, and that I need their approval in order to continue with the process. This is usually involved with big orders especially stamps and business cards. This discourse community is very fat paced and consists of a lot of formal writing. The common goal for this community is to have a 100% customer satisfaction.
Lastly, I am a student at UTEP. In this discourse community there is a lot of professional writing involved. The writing consists of emails to professors, writing memos, and research papers among other things. This isn’t one of the easiest discourse communities I’m in because it involves a lot of writing, not just for one class but for many. The common goal I share with other students is to get a better education. I am planning to double major in accounting and finance and there is specialized language that I have to understand.
There are more discourse communities that I am apart of and they all help me improve my writing skills. It is always good to be a part of them. Although they can be stressful sometimes there are other times that they are really fun. I enjoy writing for most of the discourse communities I’m in.
